Mount Kenya Chogoria Route

The Chogoria Route is one of the most scenic and rewarding ways to climb Mount Kenya, taking you from the eastern slopes of the mountain through pristine forest, expansive moorlands and dramatic alpine landscapes before reaching Point Lenana, the highest trekking summit at 4,985 metres.

Renowned for its spectacular scenery, the route passes the enchanting Hall Tarns and looks down sheer cliffs into the dramatic Gorges Valley, with breathtaking views extending towards the beautiful Lake Michaelson. Along the way, the trail winds through lush forest, beautiful valleys, high-altitude wilderness and rugged alpine terrain, offering a constantly changing landscape as you ascend higher into the mountain.

The trek culminates in an early-morning summit attempt at Point Lenana, where panoramic views across the surrounding peaks and valleys provide a spectacular reward for the climb.

Day 1: Chogoria – Mount Meru Bandas 4hrs, 16km, 950m ascent

Pick up from your hotel in Nairobi at 7:00am to Chogoria town for an early lunch. After lunch, take a 4x4WD vehicle to the foresr clearance, 16km from where the walk starts. The trail gradually climbs through dense vegetation, offering an immersive introduction to the mountain’s diverse ecosystem. Continue along the forest trail towards the Mount Meru Bandas, where you will settle in for the evening and prepare for the higher-altitude sections of the trek.

Day 2: Mount Meru Bandas – Road Head Camp 3hrs, 9km, 350m ascent

After breakfast, follow the track through the beautiful Hagenia forest, gradually making your way into the giant heather zone as the landscape begins to change with increasing altitude.

Continue along the trail towards Road Head Camp, a relatively gentle section of the trek that takes approximately 3–4 hours. Arrive at camp in the afternoon and enjoy time to rest and acclimatize before continuing to higher elevations the following day.

Day 3: Road Head Camp – Mintos Hut 4hrs, 12km

After breakfast, continue your ascent through the high-altitude moorlands towards Mintos Hut. The landscape becomes increasingly rugged and dramatic as you climb higher, with expansive views across the mountain and surrounding valleys. Arrive at Mintos Hut and rest in preparation for the early-morning summit attempt.

Day 4: Mintos Hut – Point Lenana – Met Station 11-12hrs, 29km, 785m ascent | 1985m descent

Leave shortly after midnight at around 2:00am and begin the ascent towards the main peaks. After approximately one hour, the trail divides above a flat green area at the head of the valley known as Temple Fields. Continue towards Point Lenana, arriving at around 6:30am.

After taking photographs and enjoying the summit views, descend to Mackinder’s for breakfast before continuing down to Met Station at 3,048 metres. Arrive at the station for dinner and an overnight rest.

Day 5: Met Station – Naromoru – Nairobi 3hrs, 9km, 600m descent

After breakfast, begin your final descent through the mountain forest towards Naromoru. Continue to Naromoru Park Gate at 2400m, where you will meet your vehicle for the transfer back to Nairobi. Arrive in Nairobi in the afternoon, marking the end of your Mount Kenya adventure.
