1Mt Kenya Naromoru Route

Mount Kenya Naromoru Route

The Naromoru Route is one of the most direct and scenic approaches to Mount Kenya, taking you through the mountain’s distinct ecological zones from lush rainforest and moorland to the rugged alpine landscape surrounding Point Lenana.

The trek begins at Naromoru Park Gate and gradually ascends through forest before opening into the high-altitude moorlands. As you climb higher, the landscape becomes increasingly dramatic, with sweeping valley views and striking alpine vegetation. The highlight is an early-morning summit attempt to Point Lenana, where you arrive in time to experience sunrise from Mount Kenya’s highest trekking point, weather permitting.

Day 1: Nairobi – Nairobi/ Meteorological Station 3-4 hrs, 10km, 400m ascent
Depart Nairobi and transfer to Naromoru Park Gate, where you will complete registration and begin your trek at approximately 2,600 m.The trail follows a park track along the crest of a broad ridge between the Northern and Southern Naromoru valleys. The initial walk is relatively gentle as you make your way through the beautiful montane forest. As you climb, the forest opens up to picturesque views into the Northern Naromoru Valley, particularly after crossing the bridge. Continue to the Meteorological Station at approximately 3,000 m, where you will settle in for the evening.

The terrain becomes wetter and more rugged as you cross the famous vertical bog, whose conditions vary depending on recent rainfall. Continue across the moorland until the terrain becomes firmer and the trail reaches a fork overlooking the Teleki Valley. From here, continue towards Mackinder’s Camp at approximately 4,200 m.
