Rongai Route

Hiking Mt. Kilimanjaro targets the point Kibo at 5.895 meters above sea level.

Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa, reaching a height of 5,895 meters or 19,341 feet above sea level. On clear days her snow-capped peaks can be seen from different vantage points from Arusha and Moshi.

​For those wishing to tackle Mt Kilimanjaro’s dizzying heights, there are several options open with each route having a different character; suitable in accordance to age, fitness level, prior experience as to climbing & trekking in general and at altitude, and – at the end of the day – just what you would like to experience out of your climb of Mount Kilimanjaro.

​It’s the easiest route up Kilimanjaro and it features camping-based accommodation. It has a reputation as a remote wilderness trail. Rongai is the only route to approach Kilimanjaro from the north. Possibilities of wildlife viewing and an extra day to aid acclimatization. The route is ideal for those who are not confident in their ability to hike over steeper paths, those who want to avoid traffic, and those who want to enjoy a quieter hike. It’s the preferred route during the rainy season because the north side of the mountain receives less precipitation.

Day 1. Aishi Hotel

Arrival at Kilimanjaro airport – you will be collected by your mountain guide and transfer to Aishi Machame Hotel. Depending on arrival time your guide will give you a short briefing and equipment check followed by dinner and overnight.

Day 2. Camping

Morning transfer to Rongai and Nale Moru where you reach early afternoon and start the climb. The scenery changes from Maize and potato fields into pine forest while you climb gently – you might see Colobus monkeys on the way.

When reaching the edge of the moorland zone, enjoy the views of the plains before arriving at Rongai One.

Day 3. Camping

After breakfast, you steadily hike up to Second Cave where you enjoy a rest followed by a hot lunch – enjoy the views of Kibo.

Then continue a little further across the moorland and onto Kikelewa Caves where you spend the night.

O/n Kikelewa Caves – camping (11,800 ft) (B, L, D)    

Day 4. Camping

A short but steep climb up grassy slopes offers superb views of this wilderness area. The vegetation zone ends shortly before you reach at Mawenzi Tarn, situated beneath the towering spires of Mawenzi. Spend the afternoon acclimatizing and/or exploring the area accompanied by your guide.

Day 5. Camping

Acclimatization day! Together with your guide, head up to Saddle towards Camel’s Back and return to the amp for relaxation.

Day 6. Camping

Continue ascending on the east side of Kibo crossing the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo to reach Kibo Hut. The remainder of the day is spent resting in preparation for the final ascent, which begins around midnight.

O/n Kibo Hut – camping (15,400 ft) (B, L, D)

Day 7. Camping

An early wake-up call in preparation for the summit attempt starting around 1 am. A slow steady pace must be used for the last part of your ascent which will also be the most demanding part of the entire climb. Short rest at Gillman’s point and if still strong enough continue up to Uhuru Peak – enjoy the views and the sunrise before you start the descent to Kibo Hut.

After a short rest and refreshments – continue down to Horombo Hut where you will spend the night.

O/n Horombo Hut – camping (B, L, D)

Day 8. Camping

After breakfast you descend slowly towards Marangu gate for a champagne lunch to celebrate with your team. Board the transfer vehicle and return to the hotel for well deserved showers and dinner.

O/n Aishi Machame (B, L, D)   

Day 9

Transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your flight back home.

  • Airport transfers and transfer to/from the mountain

  • Emergency Evacuation Cover (Amref)

  • Emergency oxygen (3 liter cylinder per every 4 climbers)

  • Champagne brunch on the descending day

  • Items of personal nature and not mentioned in the above itinerary
